Step # 4 Basic Dog Obedience Training is the “Down” command. Up to this point you have heard me say lots of praise and treats is the key. Well this so true with this command because this is a very submissive posture for your dog and he / she must give up not only control but any thought of control! Especially if you through a command to get them to relax at the same time. (more about that in another post)
How To Teach Your Dog The “Down” Command
From the sit position hold a very tasty treat in your closed left hand and place it close too your dogs nose.
When he smells the treat, move your left hand toward the floor, give the dogs name with the command “Down” His head will follow the hand that hides the treat.
Immediately release the treat and praise when he hits the ground!
Repeat this several times and do this pattern several times a day. This is a hard one to make stick so keep working at it until your dog is happy to submit!
Tips: Having a place with little or no distractions each day will speed the process up. If your training a puppy and your puppy see’s something running across the room then obviously it will take longer!
Do not release the treats to early on this one but not to late either! Timing is key so as to associate the perfect position with the release of the treat! It takes a few times but you will get the hang of it!
After this one is mastered then we will talk about getting your dog to heel and walk down the street like a Gentleman or Lady!
