Step # 3 Basic Dog Obedience Training | Come Command

Step # 3 Basic Dog Obedience Training is The “Come” Command. There is nothing worse than seeing your dog on the other side of the yard and you trying to get him / her in the house and when you say ” Come” he / she runs from you thinking its a game. Well, its not a game! It could be a matter of life and death at that point so the “come” command is very important and must be impressed into your dogs memory at a very young age.

I chased my first rottweiler around for a long time before I figured this one out and I will never ever chase another dog!!! If you catch a dog that is running, the first thing you want to do is discipline him / her. If you do that then I wish you luck the next time you call him / her to ” Come “. DO NOT DISCIPLINE A DOG THAT WON’T COME TO YOU!  Use praise, instead, to a dog that willingly comes to you. Have you heard the old saying “Catch More Bee’s With Honey”? Well you get more dogs with treats!

How To Teach Your Dog To Come:

  1. Clip a leash to your dog’s collar and let him drag it around.

  2. Having a partner makes this command easier to teach! Now pick up the end of the leash and with a slight tug give the dogs name and the command “Come”

  3. Praise the dog with all the goodness you have inside you and give him / her a treat! The praise is the key here! The more praise you give , the more he / she will want to come to you the next time.

  4. Repeat this several times so that your dog starts to associate the word and action ” Come” wwith lots of praise and fun and TREATS!

  5. Once you are comfortable with your dogs actions then (in an inclosed area) take the leash off and put your in the sit/stay position and walk away then turn and give the “come” command. Do this at different distances and then finally from a position out of your dogs line of site! This is the command that makes for a happy dog and a happy owner!!!
