Getting your dog to stay on command is the most important thing you can do for your dog and can be a life-saver! If you are outside and close to a street and you can’t make your dog stay on command then he / she could get run over if they get off their leash!
Teaching Your Dog To Stay: Step # 2 Basic Dog Obedience Training
Teaching your dog to stay is the hardest of all commands for your dog to follow, especially, for any length of time! Like the other basic commands, the stay is a lifesaver. A dog who will stay on command won’t chase a kid into the street or (If your lucky) a cat up a tree!. The dog who obeys the stay command can move on to more advanced training and possibly competition.
How To Teach Your Dog To Stay:
Put a leash on your dog and have him sit next to you on your left side.(this is standard)
Wave your flat palm toward his nose and say the dogs name along with a sharp “Stay.”
Step in front of your dog, waiting a few seconds, and step back beside him.
Reward and praise him for not breaking his position.
If he moves, calmly say “No” and put him back in position. Give his name and the stay command along with the hand signal.
Practice this multiple times every day in different Places. (Home, Park , ETC……
After rewarding him with lots of praise and a treats for a job well done, teach him a release word, or the word you will say when it’s time for him to be released from the stay. A good release word is “okay.”
TIPS:
Repetition and Lots of praise is key! Show Love and Patience!
